4 x 8

From a sheet of plywood we can create two chairs with a single CNC router operation. The idea is to use less material and processes to create an affordable chair.

System Works

Can design enable a system? Or is it the system that shapes the object?
This system will enable an alternative way of manufacturing chairs. The idea is to work with everything that is available in the area. From the manufacturing process and the labor involved, the materials, to the marketing and selling of the object.

The language of things

We are substituting our cell phones for PDA (personal digital assistant) devices. These are able to connect to the web bringing a new array of functions and possibilities. The biggest impact of the iphone is its capability of digital convergence. This is the way in which different functions become available in one device. This has shifted the way in which we design products, now, more frequently, the shape of the object doesn’t respond to its function, becoming a black-box, that enables the interaction through its on-screen interface.

To address the digital convergence I designed a PDA that considers the semiotics of a phone and of a camera. The form responds to the way in which we normally hold each object. The form has a slight shift in its line that allows for a semiotic recognition of a phone, allowing us to hold it as a phone or as a camera, depending on the use that we are giving the object. This example demonstrates an alternative to the black-box that enriches the semiotic communication of the object.

The language of things

Through the development of my thesis work I analyzed the consequences that the electromagnetic spectrum produced by our electronic objects has on design. To communicate my findings I developed a short film that creates different future scenarios. Within these scenarios we can perceive the product as the catalyst of an augmented layer of reality through which we mediate communication.

The resulting object that I designed was a translucent lens like object. The design of the object was developed considering a metaphor of a blindfold. Is not that we cannot see, it is the constant flow of information and multitasking that blurs the real and the artificial into this new way of seeing. link to film

But, how will the object be in the present day if we consider the EMF that it produces and the semiotics of this? I am working on developing a 3G touch-screen communication device that is able to express this.
